Following the signings of Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, Arsenal have reluctantly decided to let right-back Carl Jenkinson spend next season on loan at West Ham United.
Playing for contention
Despite the departure of Bacary Sagna to Manchester City this summer, Arsène Wenger believed that Jenkinson was not ready to make the step up to the first-team, therefore decided to make two expensive acquisitions at fullback.
According to Sky Sports, West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is delighted with his capture of Jenkinson, who he believes can shore up a defense which conceded 51 goals in the league last season.
The Telegraph claims that talks were held with the player himself on Monday, who is looking to capitalise on the England national team’s insecurity by putting his name in contention with playing regular football in the Premier League.
Time to move on…for now
The former Charlton player claimed to the Evening Standard in May that he would try and repay the faith put into him by the club and fulfill his lifelong ambition of playing consistently for the Gunners.
Even after Frenchman Debuchy arrived, Wenger indicated that Jenkinson would stay at the club for the season to fight for his place. He told the media that the player,
“is going to compete, of course. There is nobody today who can play 60 games at the top level. That's why you always need two players”
But ultimately, it looks as though Wenger has decided that the second player at right-back would be Southampton’s young right-back Calum Chambers, who has joined the Gunners on a deal that may rise up to £16 milllion.
One of us
Many supporters will be upset at the prospect of losing a fan that is one of them, but ultimately, quality talks and he isn’t at the level that is needed to win leagues just yet.
However, a year of competitive football in London will do him no harm and with Chambers’ versatility and Debuchy’s age both factors in the future, it would be foolish to rule out his Arsenal future just yet.
