With two weeks before the start of the Premier League season, the transfer saga involving Arsenal and Real Madrid has taken another subplot in the Gunners pursuit of Sami Khedira.

The Metro report that the German international has not signed for Arsenal yet, due to his wage demands potentially making him the highest paid player at the club.

Talk Khedira

However, it is thought that the North London side are still fully engaged in the transfer and TalkSport host Stan Collymore has reassured supporters that the deal is still firmly alive.

The ex-England striker has previously claimed that that he is close to agents involved in Khedira’s management and tweeted that,

“Khedira (is) still 100% on, whatever anyone else tells you.”

Despite Collymore’s claims, insidespanishfootball believe that Khedira’s personal agent Jorg Neubauer is trying to secure a lucrative contract renewal at Real Madrid for his player.

12 month job

Madrid themselves will want to have a solution sooner rather than later, as they are unwilling to allow Khedira’s current 12 month deal to be run down to next summer.

Arsenal have been in the market for a defensive midfielder, due to the uncertainty over Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini during last seasons crucial games.

Jack Wilshere has been touted as a player who could fill that role and it is thought that the signing of Calum Chambers will provide versatility to use in that position.

Priority calls

Khedira would be a fantastic signing for the Gunners, but there are enough midfielders at the club to cope with the defensive load.

Arsène Wenger recently claimed that the defensive midfield position is no longer key in a successful team; therefore he may decide to spend big money in other, more important roles at the club.
