Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is looking to add one more player to his squad and is in desperate need of somebody to provide cover at centre-back.
It is the Gunners desperation to add somebody able to play adequately at centre back that has led them to become heavily linked with Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes.
Star of 2014 World Cup
The Germany defender, who was one of the stars during the 2014 World Cup – playing every minute in his countries victorious campaign, can play as a central defender but also provide cover at left-back.
The Telegraph believe Arsenal are interested in bringing the defender to the Emirates but there remains doubts about whether Howedes would depart Schalke.
He is currently club captain of the German outfit and the English publication are unsure if he would be willing to give that up to move to London, where he may not be guaranteed as a first choice starter.
Can Wenger convince the German to sign?
Therefore whether Wenger could convince Howedes to move to England remains to be seen, it would certainly help that various of his Germany team mates current reside in north London with the Gunners.
That could work in Arsenal’s favour and with the club needing a defensive addition; you would imagine they would pull out all the stops to secure the signature of the World Cup winner.
Whether they can add another German to the playing staff still remains uncertain though but Wenger would be wise to move quickly with Champions League qualifiers coming up.
