Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld could be set to leave the Spanish club on loan, according to his father who acts as his agent.
The Belgian central defender only moved to Atletico last season from Ajax but struggled to obtain a starting role and only featured 12 times.
Alderweireld set for loan
He has previously been linked with a move to Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool and the latest comments from Vic Alderweireld will interest Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
Alderweireld’s agent and father was quoted by the Daily Star, he said:
“Toby wants to play, going out on loan would be the best option.
“If there is a solution, Atletico won’t stand in his way.
“Since last year, we’ve had several discussions on this issue and Atletico understands that we don’t think it makes sense to leave Toby on the bench for another year.”
Logical move for all parties involved
With Wenger keen to add another established central defender to his squad a move for the Belgian would appear logical, especially on loan as it would be a cheaper option.
The north London club have been linked with a number of talented midfielders and defenders but Alderweireld could be the perfect signing.
With the Belgian again unlikely to be first choice at Atletico, a move to England where several of his countryman ply their trade could be tempting.
With around two weeks to go until the transfer window slams shut, Wenger would be wise to move fast to secure Alderweireld’s signing as a number of other clubs across Europe will also be queuing up to get his services.
