In the wake of Arsenal’s current striker crisis, Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his confidence that star man Marco Reus will sign a new contract with the Bundesliga club.
Frontman Olivier Giroud will face up to 3 months on the sidelines thanks to what looks to be an ankle injury sustained when Everton’s Sylvain Distin cannoned the ball off the striker’s standing leg in the dying moments of our 2-2 draw at Goodison.
Striker Shortage
And while Yaya Sanogo remains in the centre-forward position, many would be quick to say he is not at the level the Gunners need to mount a title challenge. Alexis Sanchez failed to impress in the role at the weekend, along with Joel Campbell who both prefer a wider berth.
Wenger’s options seem limited up front, and it is not as if he has not had time to weigh up his options if he is to make a move before September 1st. Last season’s downfall was largely down to the lack of firepower aside from Giroud, who tired towards the thick end of the campaign.
Staying Put
Reus himself has been a long term target of Arsenal, along with the rest of Europe’s elite, who have tried their hardest to tempt the Germany international – famed for his loyalty to Borussia – away from the Bundesliga runners up.
Manchester United in particular failed in their attempt to land the 25-year-old, offering him huge wages in return for his services, along with interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona. And Reus has toyed with his potential suitors by failing to sign a new contract with the Signal Iduna side.
His current contract is believed to contain a £28million buyout clause, a somewhat respectable fee for the 2014 Dortmund Player of the Year.
However his boss remains confident that the player he recently made captain will pledge his future to the club:
‘I have a very good feeling about the Marco Reus situation,’ he told German newspaper Bild.
‘He will continue to play for Dortmund for a long time.’
Other options on Arsene Wenger’s supposed wishlist include QPR’s Loic Remy, Swansea’s Wilfried Bony and Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck having missed out on Mario Balotelli.
