The transfer of Danny Welbeck from Manchester United to Arsenal was one of the biggest on transfer deadline day but it has been met with mixed reaction from pundits and managers alike.
Some quarters have praised the deal Arsenal have got and believed the England international can flourish at the Emirates.
However, many also feel Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is right to sell the 23-year-old because of his inconsistency.
Not good enough for Man United?
The Red Devils boss has been speaking about the deadline day transfer and believes he made the right decision, letting Welbeck depart Old Trafford after 14 years at the club.
Daily Telegraph quoted van Gaal, he said:
“Danny Welbeck was here (United) when he was nine-years-old.
“After a season on loan at Sunderland, he then played for three seasons at United, but he doesn’t have the record of Robin van Persie or Wayne Rooney and that is the standard.
“That is why we let him go, not only because of Falcao, but also the youngsters who can fit in. I have given all the players a chance to convince me of their qualities.”
Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has backed the decision by van Gaal but also praised Welbeck and admitted the Gunners have signed a very good player.
Louis van Gaal is right!
Daily Express quoted the former Tottenham Hotspur boss, he said: “The manager’s looked at the situation and decided that if he’s going to bring Falcao in then Welbeck’s not going to play.
“Arsenal have bought a very good player, and that’s the decision of the manager of Manchester United. That’s what he does, and that’s what he does well.
“I would think he’s got more decisions right over the years that what he’s got wrong and that’s why he’s managed at the top level for so long. So, who can argue with him?”
Owen backs former team
Meanwhile former England international Michael Owen has praised the quality of Welbeck and believes Arsene Wenger could have got himself the signing of the summer by purchasing the young attacker for just £16 million.
Daily Telegraph quoted Owen, he said: “He has always had doubters and I can understand why he has but I have always been a big fan of Danny’s.
“I have trained with him for three years, obviously during my time at Manchester United, and he is a player. He can play, no question about it.
“People will complain about his goal ratio at Manchester United but you try getting in as a centre forward!
“When Danny did play, he would play out on the left or on the right, so different positions like that.”
Impressive England record
Owen pointed out that Welbeck’s England record of ten goals in 28 games is impressive and believes if he plays through the centre then he can become a great player for Arsenal.
“As his England record would suggest, when he does play down the middle, and he has played out on the left a bit for England, but when he plays down the middle he can certainly score a goal and I think he is a pretty good buy for Arsenal.
“I can see Danny really improving, I think he is a player that can improve with age. He is quick, he has got really good feet and he can score a goal.
“He just hasn’t really been given an opportunity on a consistent basis to play that role down the middle but with Arsenal having one or two injuries to key players I think Danny will be given that chance and I think it could be one of the signings of the summer.”
High praise from Owen and Arsenal fans will be hoping come May, that Welbeck has proved his former team mate right.
