Mesut Ozil has admitted the only opinion that is important to him is the view of the Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, as he discussed his impressive assist record for the club.

The German playmaker has received criticism since moving to the Emirates last year in a deal worth €50 million.

However, Wenger has continuously praised the former Real Madrid ace and as long as he continues doing that, Ozil will be happy.

Ozil happy with praise from boss

Goal.com quoted the 25-year-old on the praise he receives and Le Professor.

“I’m not so sure about the praise. You always have to deliver on the pitch,” Ozil said. “I’m so proud to play for a club with so many fans but my goal is firstly to help the team on the pitch and I do that.

“What’s most important for me is what the boss thinks of me. He gives me his trust and he knows the potential I have. I’m just thankful that he’s given me his faith and I think that if he says I play intelligently, then he’s probably right!”

Ozil created nine goals in the Premier League last season, an impressive tally and the German is proud of his assist record for the club.

Assist record important to German

He insists it doesn’t matter, though, who scores or creates the goal because it is all about the team.

“I’m very proud of my assist record,” Ozil added. “Often there is a lot of talk or a lot written about goals and not necessarily about who has given the assist, which is normal. But you can’t forget that the assists are just as important as goals.

“But it doesn’t matter who sets up the goal or who scores it, the most important thing is that we are successful as a team. I’m a player who doesn’t score that many goals but gives a lot more assists.

“Of course my aims this season are to score lots of goals and provide many assists to help the team. I’m positive that I can do that because I have the potential and the faith of the coach.”

Ozil’s team mate Theo Walcott believes the German will thrive this year with extra pace in the Arsenal team, following the addition of England international Danny Welbeck.

‘Pace will help Ozil’

Walcott was speaking to Arsenal Player and admitted he can see the playmaker having a great campaign with the Gunners.

“When [Mesut] was at Real Madrid and he had Di Maria, Ronaldo and Benzema, three very pacy guys, the number of assists he got was absolutely key,” Walcott said.

“It’s a massive season for him personally and I think the likes of us guys will help him tremendously.

“There’s a lot of pacy guys in this team now and we’re thinking that’s what we might have lacked last year, especially when I got injured - there weren’t as many players to get in behind [defences]. Defenders then double up on you, which creates space for other people.

“You have us bombing on and then you have the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mesut and Tomas Rosicky, who can all spot a pass, so that’s only going to help the team. We’ll be very dangerous on the counter-attack.

“It’s very exciting for Arsenal fans to see. I think it will maybe bring back the years where we were so successful. It’s all about pace now and that’s what you need in a team and we have bags and bags of that.”

Arsenal fans will hope Ozil can have a massive season and they’ll be excited to see how he links up with Welbeck and co at the weekend when they host Manchester City in the Premier League.
