As the transfer window opens the first transfer which involves Arsenal is an exit. Lukas Podolski landed in Milan last night to complete his move to Inter today. This is yet to be confirmed by Arsenal.com but the deal is expected to happen.
It is understood Podolski underwent a medical this morning before officially being announced as an Inter player this afternoon. Details of the loan are yet to be announced but according to various reports it is a loan until the end of the season costing them €600,000.
However, it was reported that there would be an option to buy, however, it is now believed that Arsenal have not included this clause mainly because if Podolski has a good 5-6 months in Italy then Arsenal may be able to gain more interest in Podolski’s services which will eventually lead to a bigger transfer fee.
Roberto Mancini had the following to say on the deal;
“I know him well, he’s a world champion and Germans always do well in Italy.”
Further to this it is understood Podolski has taken a pay cut to ensure the deal happened as Inter and Arsenal were struggling to agree a loan fee.
Moreover, it is looking increasingly likely that Podolski did force his way out of Arsenal. Apparently injured, he was soon in Italy and Podolski had the following to say on his arrival in Italy.
“I spoke to Mancini and think he’s a great Coach. He wanted me and I’m happy to be here. I know Serie A, it’s a very competitive League.
“I want to help the team get into the Champions League. Do I have a message for the fans? I am happy, Forza Inter and we hope to have a great season.”
It is clear to see that Podolski knows what to say to the fans to keep them happy and it is sad to see his image at Arsenal potentially damaged.
However, if we look back Podolski has provided us with some great memories and some great goals. The one goal that sticks in my memory is his volley in the champion’s league against Montpellier.
