Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has crushed the chances of a January switch to the Emirates after committing himself to St.Mary’s until at least the end of the season.
Following an interview with Telefoot , the young midfielder claimed he is staying put:
“I think I’ll finish the season at Southampton and we’ll see what will happen next. I don’t set my mind on these things anymore.”
Schneiderlin was a prime transfer target of both North London clubs, Arsenal and Tottenham, last summer with Spurs getting almost snapping up the Frenchman before the deal falling through. Schneiderlin had a very brief falling out with Southampton around this time as he refused to train until the deal could be made, however this heated battle has since cooled.
This news comes as a blow to Arsenal fans who have been crying out for a new midfield general after seeing countless weak defensive performances this season.
This hard hitting midfielder would be ideal for the Gunners with his strength and skill being a nice fit for the North Londoners. It goes without saying Arsenal have lacked a defensive midfielder this season, with Mikel Arteta’s niggling injuries and the inconsistency of Mathieu Flamini.
The fact Calum Chambers was playing the holding role against Southampton clearly highlights the Gunners’ need to strengthen in that position.
Schneiderlin has impressed many clubs as of late, so much in fact he received a call up to the French National team at the Brazil World cup, playing a prominent role in the squad.
Although this deal may not look possible this window, Arsenal have been linked with many midfielders such as Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, Rubin Kazan’s Yann M’villa and Manchester City’s James Milner.
The main question for Wenger is, who should he get and how much should he spend?
