According to The Metro this morning, Arsenal are becoming ever closing to the signing of German international Ilkay Gundogan after lodging a bid for the midfielder.

According to this source, the bid is believed to be in the region of around £15.6million, a fee in which Borussia Dortmund are said to be considering.

Wenger is a keen admirer of Gundogan and it would be no surprise if a bid was in fact lodged. This news follows various reports last week that Arsenal were indeed interested in the holding midfielder and it appears now that the Gunners have made contact about a deal.

This is not a surprise to many Germans fans as it has been reported that Ilkay is unhappy at Borussia, with the side trailing towards the bottom of the Bundes Liga. He himself has indicated that he would like to challenge himself against the best in Europe, specifically England and Spain, and perhaps now is his chance

It is safe to say Arsenal have been lacking defensively this season and fans have been crying out for a new holding midfielder. Following the injury to Mikel Arteta, there is now a battle between Francis Coquelin and Mathieu Flamini for the spot in front of the defence. I’m sure many fans would be delighted to hear the news Gundogan could be moving to the Emirates.

He is undoubtedly world class however he has just come back from a fifteen month layoff due to injury so he is not match fit nor will he be at his best for a while. However you would still love to have him in your team and it could be just the signing Wenger needs this window to help bolster the squad for the Champions League. This is definitely interesting news for Arsenal fans out there. Hopefully we hear more on this soon.
