According to newspaper The Mirror today, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen to sign Fiorentina shot stopper Norberto Neto from under the nose of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool.
The Brazilian has been linked with a move to the Premier League during Simon Mingolet’s rocky patch with the Reds towards the end of last year and has since been on Rodgers’ list for January.
However it is being rumoured that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is looking to replace Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny following a run of poor form, both on and off the pitch. Szczesny had been caught smoking in the showers following the horror show at St. Mary’s and has since been dropped. Various reports have also stated that Szczesny had been sent to train with the under-21s side as a form of punishment.
Columbian David Ospina has since replaced the Pole in nets and has kept several clean sheets, though was not asked much of in these games. Wenger is apparently weighing up a move for Neto as backup as it became clear a deal for Chelsea’s Petr Cech was not possible.
In a press conference Wenger could not confirm if Szczesny would be in the squad for Arsenal’s FA Cup tie against Brighton, stating:
“I haven’t made that decision yet”
Don’t be surprised to see Martinez start between the sticks this weekend for the match against Brighton. If these reports are to be believed, then Wenger may have lost his patience with Szczesny, a player who is certainly talented, but his decision making can let himself down too often.
Interesting developments if Wenger is pursuing a new ‘keeper, and if he is, is it time for Szczesny to move on?
