Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has come out today and crushed reports that Arsenal could well sign Asier Illarramendi, stating that the young midfielder is a part of his plans.
It was reported earlier that Arsenal were in the running to sign the Spaniard. It was reported that Illaramendi welcomed a move to Arsenal, hoping they would put in a bid for him, following his dissatisfaction of a possible move to Athletic Club Bilbao.
It was believed that Arsenal were to put in an offer for the player however, according to Ancelotti, the midfielder will be going nowhere.
Illarramendi has struggled to make an impact on the Real Madrid side, following his move from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2013, and it was believed he was becoming frustrated by his lack of chances he was getting at Los Blancos.
In a press conference today, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti crushed rumours over the midfielder’s future, stating he had an important role at the club:
‘He is a player of Real Madrid and though it’s true he hasn’t played much, we still have confidence in him,’ he said.
‘He’s important in the locker room.’
This is a blow to the Gunners as Illarramendi is a highly rated footballer. He is a tough tackling defensive midfielder, a position the Gunners are severely lacking some depth in. He is also praised for his ball distribution and would no doubt fit well into the Arsenal squad if they were to sign him.
Arsenal are in need of some cover in that position as they are currently relying on Francis Coquelin, who is in fantastic form, but if he gets injured, the Gunners are left with Flamini who has been inconsistent this season. It seems however that this deal is off for the time being so don’t expect him in North London this transfer window at least.
