FA Cup never leaves us bereft of drama as Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton were knocked out of the tournament in the same day that a Championship side forced Liverpool into a replay.
Arsenal supporters will be hoping that the curse on Premier League clubs is not carried on by their club.
However, there is one Arsenal supporter, who wishes that his team succumb to a defeat at Falmer Stadium as the Gunners bid to defend their only trophy in a decade.
Jake Forster-Caskey, the Seagulls midfielder came out as a Gooner during his interview with The Sun stating that he always supported the North London club, but pledged that he’ll play his part to ensure that Arsenal do not progress beyond this round.
The 20-year-old midfielder claimed that he is proud to be a Gooner and added that he had hardly missed games during the Highbury days.
“I’m a proud Gooner. I used to watch games at Highbury and I see big matches at the Emirates, especially in the Champions League.”
He admitted his admiration for Arsene Wenger’s accomplishments and lauded his youth development system. He also revealed that he grew up watching Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry don the famous red and white shirt.
The English youth international came to the rescue of Mesut Ozil, who is often criticized for his poor work-rate and reluctance to adapt to the demands of Premier League. He announced that he would be swapping shirts with the German playmaker, whom he looks up to.
“If we win, I’m grabbing Mesut’s shirt. As a midfielder myself, I’ve always liked the way he plays. He’s had some stick since coming to England, but no reigning world champion can be considered a bad player.”
Though he mentioned his love for the club and their legends, he is determined to place professionalism over fondness as he foresees yet another giant-killing in one of the oldest English tournaments. He also added that he would take Mesut Ozil’s shirt home and hang it in his lounge as a memento.
“He’s had an injury but is back now and I reckon this could be his season. There will be no greater memento for me after a famous giant-killing than to have his shirt framed and hanging in my lounge.”
With only Manchester United and Liverpool still in contention to challenge for the trophy, Arsenal may well be billed to successfully defend it. However, they will have to overcome Brighton barrier tonight.
