Arsenal captain, Mikel Arteta, has signed a new deal at the North London club. The Spanish midfielder has signed a one year extension at the club, keeping him at the Emirates until the end of next season.

Arteta previous deal was to run out at the end of the season, however it is clear that Arsenal have been keen to keep Arsenal’s skipper at the club.

Arteta, 32, is not the only midfielder whose current deal is to run out at the end of the season.

Players such as Mathieu Flamini and Abou Diaby’s contract are up come the end of the Premier League. It is widely believed that both of these midfielders will be allowed to leave North London come June time.

Flamini has dropped down the pecking order since the return of Francis Coquelin and it looks as though Arsenal’s latest edition Krystian Bielik may move ahead of him in the list.

Abou Diaby on the other hand has not been seen in a Gunners shirt for some time following his unbelievably bad luck with injuries over recent years. It is presumed that Arsenal have lost patience in him, which is a shame as he is a quality midfielder when he is fit.

Arteta had signed with Arsenal on deadline day 2011 from Everton and took over the captain’s armband in 2014, following the departure of the then captain, Thomas Vermaelen.

Arteta, however, has been somewhat of a bit part player this season, making only a few appearances at the start of the season. Arteta is currently out injured and will not be back in the squad until around April following ankle surgery.
