Reports in Italy today are claiming that both Premier League sides, Arsenal and Liverpool, are in contention to sign Argentinian international Gonzalo Higuain in the summer transfer window.

According to Italian journalists, Higuain wants to leave the Naples side at the end of his second season with the club. The Naples newspaper The Messenger contained the headline:

“Higuain, goodbye Italy”

It seems as though Italians journalists are convinced that the Argentine is on his way out of the club at the end of the season and expect a sale for the striker.

Higuain, 27, has been a very consistent performer for the Serie A side this season. He has been in good form, scoring 12 goals in 20 league games this season, to add to his 17 goals in 32 games in his first season at the Italian outfit. Higuain has played well, however he has failed to live up to the expectations of the Napoli board who were hoping he would fill the boots of their star Edinson Cavani who left in a big money move to PSG.

The Argentine striker cost the Italian side £35million two seasons ago and it seems like they wish to get most of the money they spent on him back by selling him on.

Liverpool are set to be very interested in the striker as they look to fill the gap left by Luis Suarez. With Daniel Sturridge injured Liverpool have looked short up front this season and a striker of this quality would certainly help.

Arsenal have been long time admires of Higuain. At one stage it had appeared that Dick Law had negotiated a deal to bring Higuain to the Emirates, only for Napoli to hijack the deal. Arsenal’s interest may have cooled somewhat following the acquisition of players like Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez; the Gunners seem covered up front. It is also believed Wenger is only in the market for defensive players this window.
