Thanks to a few defensive lapses, Arsenal succumbed to a 1-3 home defeat to Monaco and now have a mountain to climb to progress further in Champions League as anything short of a three-goal victory will see them thrash out of the tournament.
However, Mesut Ozil seemed upbeat as he claimed that Arsenal could still seal their spot in the quarter finals overcoming the gigantic Monaco hurdle.
The Gunners have lately earned a reputation of scoring early goals and the German international believes that netting early into the first half could be pivotal in their attempt to see off the French outfit. He confessed that the Arsenal roster is determined to turn things around and pull off a miracle against Monaco.
“It’s very important to score early, but we will remain patient. We want to fight and battle from the first minute until the last. This is a match that we are determined to win. We have to score three goals and our aim is to do just that while remaining tight in defence. If we play as we are capable of doing in Monaco, I still believe that we have a real chance to progress.”
Monaco have maintained a decent record in Champions League this season, having conceded only twice throughout the course of the season and are reputed to build harmony in their play early into the game. Mesut Ozil affirmed that his side would attempt to break their deadlock as he looks to replicate their recent performances.
“We want to disrupt their rhythm and try to score as early as possible. It’s going to be difficult to score three times because they have defended well in the tournament so far, but if you look at our past matches and the way we played against Manchester United last week, I think there’s a chance we can still progress.”
He emphasized on the importance of self-belief in football as he told Arsenal Player that Arsenal could pull off the unlikely in the event of believing in their potential.
“We have to believe in ourselves. When you believe in yourselves, a positive energy grows that you can achieve your aims. In football, things that may look unlikely can happen. I know that if we believe in ourselves and utilise our potential, we can still go through.”
Mesut Ozil has now become a stronger version of himself bagging three goals and four assists at the back of his recuperation and will look to add on to his impressive performance as Arsenal visit to Stade Louis II on Tuesday night.
