Arsenal are known to kick their transfer activity off whilst the Premier League giants are already at their point of culmination, but Arsene Wenger now looks to change the tide by being shrewd early into the transfer window.

Reports from Portugal suggest that the Gunners’ representatives were in attendance at Estadio da Luz as Benfica drew with Porto last weekend and it is being rumoured that their visit was to witness not just one potential target, but three offensive players.

With the French manager already known to be an admirer of Jackson Martinez, it was evident that the man of focus was the Columbian striker, who has notched up twenty four goals in thirty four appearances for the Portuguese outfit.

Olivier Giroud has, indeed, transformed himself from a multi-million lamppost to a cult figure at the Emirates Stadium, having averaged a goal every 108 minutes in Premier League this season, but Arsenal do not have a proper centre-forward to compete with him.

Given his goal-scoring record, Jackson Martinez fits the bill to compete, if not, bring the best out of the French striker.

The 28-year-old will most likely cost the London club a whopping £32 million since his current contract with Porto runs for two more seasons, but Arsene Wenger would not mind making his third big money signing in three seasons given his apparent goal-scoring prowess.

It is reported that the other parties of interest during the heavyweight clash were Yacine Brahimi and Anderson Talisca of Benfica, who have caught the eyes of a host of clubs.
