Arsenal have allegedly made an unsuccessful, yet ambitious attempt to lure Olympiakos shot-stopper Roberto Jimenez to the Emirates Stadium as an understudy to summer signing Petr Cech, according to the Spanish media.

Emiliano Martinez recently followed in the footsteps of another academy graduate Wojciech Szczesny out of the club on loan highlighting the need for a goalkeeper signing this summer and Arsene Wenger seems eager to fill their voids with a top quality addition - Roberto Jimenez.

The Gunners have failed to meet the release clause of the 29-year-old that is estimated to be in the region of £4.3million and the Greek side reportedly are prepared to sell him and are only holding out for an improved transfer offer.

The Spanish custodian, despite not having made an international breakthrough, can be touted to fit the bill to be called upon when the first-choice keeper is forced to be on the sidelines. Given his Champions League experience and laurels with Olympiakos, he could be called a sensible signing.

Roberto Jimenez has represented his nation on various youth levels and has featured for clubs in and around Europe  throughout his career, but it is highly unlikely that he completes the switch, if David Ospina decides to stay.
