Alexis Sanchez, alongside the likes of Francis Coquelin, was one of the standout performers at Arsenal last season, having scored 25 goals in all competitions, but is yet to open his account this season to add more misery to poor start to their campaign.
The Chilean striker was heavily involved in the Copa America winning Chile national team and is still struggling to be that lethal weapon that he was last season. Arsene Wenger admitted that he used him when he still had his national duties hangover stating that he was physically unfit to feature that early for the Gunners.
“I played him very early before he was completely fit, physically,” the boss said. “That is one explanation. The second is that every player who has won a big trophy with his national team takes some while to settle and come back to his best. These are the two main explanations for me.”
The London outfit continue to create a lot of chances every game, but have not identified an able striker to make the ball cross the line. Their manager, however; believes that the former Barcelona man should have added at least six goals to his tally and that he can still be a threat even if he does not score much.
“I think he has had 31 shots on goal since the start of the season and with his finishing qualities that should allow him five to six goals. Knowing that the finishing is a bit linked with your form and it is a bit cyclic as well, that is where he should be at the moment.
“That will come back, I don’t worry for Alexis Sanchez. Even when he doesn’t score he is still a major threat for everybody and I am confident he will score very soon.”
Alexis Sanchez can be expected to be a part of the starting eleven as the Community Shield holders travel to Leicester on Saturday afternoon after missing the game against Tottenham in the third round of Capital One Cup.
