Arsenal have handed 20-year-old goalkeeper Guy Smit a two-week trail at the Arsenal Training Centre, Metro reports. The English tabloid reveals that he has had numerous offers from Championship outfits like Brighton and Hove Albion; however, he has pledged to seize the opportunity the Gunners have presented.

“This opportunity I have to seize,” he told Dutch regional newspaper De Gelderlander. The chances of the former NEC Nijmegen shot-stopper earning a contract with the Premier League runners-up is slim, especially since he has not been able to earn even a single start for a club that finished tenth in Eredivisie.

Arsenal already have a world-class ‘keeper in Petr Cech, and either Wojciech Szczesny or David Ospina is increasingly likely to stay with the N5 club beyond this summer. In addition, Emiliano Martinez, who had an impressive loan spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, will fancy his chances in the near future. The reserves team also boast topnotch custodians, with Matt Macey and Deyan Iliev expected to make their breakthrough shortly.

With the roster crammed with top quality players and future prospects, Arsenal are not in a desperate need for a ‘keeper signing. Accordingly, Smit needs to display something magical in front of coach Arsene Wenger during his stint at the London Colney training ground in order to wear the Arsenal shirt in a competitive fixture.

Arsenal announced the signing of Japanese international striker Takuma Asano on July 3. They are expected to bring in a senior striker to ease the pressure off Olivier Giroud’s shoulders, with Alvaro Morata, Romelu Lukaku, and Alexandre Lacazette already being contacted over a potential summer transfer.
