Arsenal have completed the transfers of Jon Toral and Wellington Silva, with the former already made official and the latter expected to be made official in the coming days. Toral joins Primeira Division club Granada on a season-long loan whilst Wellington bids adieu to the London club with a permanent move to his former club, Fluminense.
With Birmingham City, Toral enjoyed a successful loan spell, even claiming Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the Year last season. After two seasons in the Championship, observers expected manager Arsene Wenger to hand him a run with Arsenal’s first team this season, especially in light of the release of Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta, and Mathieu Flamini. However, the manager seems content with heading into the 2016/17 campaign with just a single midfield addition in Granit Xhaka.
No player who has gone on multiple loan spells have been able to make it at Arsenal, but the 21-year-old Spaniard may as well make his first-team breakthrough next season, given his undoubted talent. Injuries have curtailed his progress, but a single injury-free season in La Liga will suffice to make the revival of his career complete.
Wellington, on the other hand, has always been mooted as an elite prospect, but after many less-than-stellar loan spells — most recently with Bolton Wanderers — Wenger has finally decided to flog him. He joins Fluminense on a four-year deal, at least according to Brazilian journalist Renan Moura. Arsenal will be wise to include a buy-back option as many players like Benik Afobe and Carlos Vela have proceeded to become top class players after departing Emirates Stadium.
