Arsenal wrapped up the signing of Granit Xhaka early before bringing down a Japanese international striker in Takuma Asano.
Manolas
With Arsenal rumoured to bring down a top-class defender besides a striker, it appeared as though Kostas Manolas could be the defender joining the Arsenal ranks as he has been linked with them since 2014.
However, Roma president James Pallotta has all but confirmed that he would not depart the Stadio Olimpico club (via Coral Barry of Metro) this summer, hinting that the Greek defender, who is valued at around £38m, would have a role to play in their Champions League campaign next season.
“Why on earth should Manolas leave? Juan Jesus and Nacho are two experienced defenders who are going to help us,” said Pallotta. “The team is working very hard for the Champions League play off stage.”
Arsene Wenger has Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Gabriel Paulista, and Calum Chambers at his disposal, but in no time, they may be in need of a young top-class defensive addition. The 25-year-old Roma centre-back fits the bill, but thanks to his non-availability, the Gunners will now need to look elsewhere for alternatives.
Ochs
In other news (via George Bellshaw of Metro), Arsenal have been looking to pull off an Arsenal-esque signing, with the French manager sending scouts to watch Hoffenheim teenage winger, Philipp Ochs.
The German youth international has been in incredible form for Germany at the Under-19 European Championship, where he has averaged one goal per game. He will likely not cost the London club much, but he can be a wise investment if he manages to hone his craft under Andries Jonker and Wenger.
