In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Arsenal legend Robert Pires has admitted that he is angling for a return to North London.

Few can argue with the fact that Robert Pires is one of the greatest ever attacking players to have donned the famous Arsenal jersey.

Pires joined the Gunners from Marseille during the summer of 2000 as a replacement for the recently departed Marc Overmars and he most certainly had a huge job on his hands to fill the boots of the Dutchman.

Despite the pressure though, the ex-French international went on to become a massive success in the Red side of North London and in his six years at the club, he managed to claim five major honours.

It has nearly been a decade since Pires’ departure from Arsenal but he remains a very popular figure among the club supporters and now the 43-year-old has gone on to make an admission which his certain to please the Gunners’ faithful.

Speaking to Indian newspaper, the Hindustan Times, Pires explained that he would love the chance to make a return to Arsenal and confirmed that he is planning to take up the role as the sporting director at the Emirates Stadium.

Pires - Arsenal's future sporting director?

Pires stated, “Yes, it is my objective (to return to Arsenal). I don’t know what will happen in the future, but I need to talk about it with the owners and Arsene Wenger.

“I’d love this job, I love to talk with the players. If I’m given this job one day, I can stay in contact with football, especially with Arsenal. I have a good relation with the manager, that’s important.

“I can work with the players, I can give advice to the young players, so we can find a good relationship between me and the players.”

Legends such as Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Mikel Arteta among others are all still involved in football following their retirements but none of them are currently working at Arsenal.

Therefore, the return of Pires to Arsenal would most certainly be a welcome one for the fans and it will be interesting to see if the club take steps to facilitate any potential move.
