Speaking to Football Fanzone, former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has bafflingly slammed Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.

Mesut Ozil may have struggled initially to adapt to life in the physical nature of the Premier League after joining Arsenal from Real Madrid during the summer of 2013 for a club record fee of around £42.5 million but there is no doubting the fact that the German superstar is arguably one of the best players in the English top flight at the moment.

Ozil has been in imperious form over the past few seasons for Arsenal and the 28-year-old has arguably been at his best during the current campaign, scoring 7 goals as well as providing 4 assists in all competitions so far this season.

Despite all his exploits though, Ozil still seems to attract criticism from some quarters in the English media and now former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has launched an astonishing attack on the former Werder Bremen star.

Cundy stated his belief that Ozil does not have a ‘backbone’ to fight for his team and stated that the Arsenal playmaker would not get anywhere near the current Chelsea side.

He said in an interview with Football Fanzone, “Aside from not being world class, he isn’t even the best player at his club right now as Sanchez is proving more important and I wouldn’t have him anywhere near Chelsea.

Not World Class??

“I was asked who I would take between him and Dele Alli prior to the North London derby, give me Alli all day. At least he has a backbone and heart for the fight.

“For me Ozil epitomises Arsenal, the two were made for each other. He’s pretty on the eye but when the bullets start flying he is nowhere to be seen. He’s the kind of person that rocks up to a party when the cake is being cut and blows out the candles but isn’t there to help set up or to help clean up after either.”

While aspects of Ozil’s defensive game can be criticized, to state that the attacker is not world class is beyond ridiculous and Cundy’s comments seem to be borne more out of jealously rather than sound judgment.
