Speaking to Le10Sport, Djibril Sidibé has gone on to confirm that he rejected Arsenal in order to join Monaco this summer.
Arsenal’s need to sign a new centre back this summer was well documented and although it took a lot of time, fans were relieved after manager Arsene Wenger made a swoop for German international Shkodran Mustafi close to deadline day.
Since his arrival, Mustafi has proven himself to be a crucial figure at the heart of the backline for Arsenal and despite their sizeable £35 million splash, the Gunners’ can be left very pleased with their investment in the defender.
Before the signing of Mustafi though, Arsenal were linked with a host of players and defender Djibril Sidibé was widely believed to have been wanted by the North London giants.
Sidibé was one of the most sought out defenders in Europe following impressive displays for Lille over the years and he eventually went on to join Monaco this summer on a five year deal.
However, the French international has now gone on to speak regarding the alleged interest from Arsenal and has confirmed that the Gunners did in fact make an offer for his services over the summer.
Sidibe was quoted saying by Le10Sport, “I came from a big season with plenty of goals. I had been decisive on many occasions. After, there was this call-up for the France team. Somehow I expected offers. It came.
“It is true that this offer (Arsenal) came at the last moment. I had already made my choice for Monaco. But it’s very flattering. Today, Arsenal is one of the biggest teams in the world. As I said, today I am in Monaco. I’m happy and I know it has been interpreted in a certain way. But that’s part of the trade.”
Sidibe is undoubtedly a very good defender but Arsenal fans most certainly would not be too disappointed by the fact that the club managed to sign Mustafi instead of the Frenchman.
