Speaking to the Daily Star, former Arsenal star Paul Merson has made some controversial comments which are unlikely to impress the fans.
Paul Merson turned out for Arsenal between 1985 and 1997, and there is no doubting the fact that the winger is a popular figure among the Gunners’ faithful.
The ex-England international made over 400 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal and his shock departure to Middlesbrough back in 1997 certainly left many fans at Highbury very disappointed.
Following his retirement from professional football back in 2006, Merson moved into punditry and is one of the main personalities for major broadcasting company Sky Sports. Known for his light hearted style of punditry, Merson is now a well liked media figure as well.
However, the 48-year-old does tend to make controversial statements from time to time and the Englishman has now gone on to do just that regarding his former club Arsenal.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Merson stated that he does not think that Arsenal will be able to win the title this season and pointed out that the Gunners have been lucky on numerous occasions during the current campaign.
When asked if Arsenal will claim the Premier League triumph, he replied, "No, I don’t see it. They played Middlesbrough at home and were very lucky to get a result. They were 1-1 with 15 minutes to go against Sunderland.”
Merson a fan of Chelsea??
To further stick a boot into his former side, Merson surprisingly stated that he is a Chelsea fan and added that he would be left disappointed if the Blues were unable to win the title this season.
He continued, “I’m a Chelsea fan and I’d be disappointed if Chelsea finish above Man City and didn’t win the Premier League."
Considering his long association with Arsenal, Merson’s comments regarding Chelsea certainly seems a bit strange and the Gunners faithful would surely not have been pleased to hear their former hero making such statements.
