Lothar Matthaus has urged interested clubs such as Arsenal to steer clear of signing Julian Draxler due to his weak character.

Arsenal have been long time admirers of Julian Draxler and the Gunners most certainly stand a great chance of securing the services of the German international during the upcoming January transfer window.

Draxler has made it clear in no uncertain terms that he wants to leave Wolfsburg as soon as possible and having denied the midfielder a chance to move over the summer, club chief Klaus Allofs has now admitted that he will be looking to offload the unhappy star in January.

With Draxler seemingly being made available, Arsenal are widely expected to launch their pursuit for the 23-year-old when the transfer window reopens in a months’ time and it will certainly be interesting to see if the Gunners are able to finally sign the ex-Schalke star.

Many do feel that Draxler will be a great addition to the Arsenal squad if indeed he arrives at the Emirates Stadium but surprisingly, German legend Lothar Matthaus does not share the same sentiment.

Matthaus stated that although Draxler is a very talented player, top teams should not spend big money to secure his services as the attacking midfielder has not shown as of yet that he is mentally tough enough to consistently make a difference at the highest level.

The former Germany skipper wrote in his weekly column for Sport Bild, "He is also to be held responsible for where Wolfsburg stand right now.

“I say very clearly: I would currently not sign Draxler as a top club because of his weak character. He might be a talent, but he has not shown he can make a difference at the highest level on a permanent basis."
