Backup for Carlton Cole. Doesn't sound like the most glamorous position in world football, does it? Be that as it may, that is the role that Marouane Chamakh can enjoy for the next six months.

The Morrocan striker has joined West Ham United on loan until the end of the season, when his position will be reviewed. The deal has been confirmed by both West Ham and Arsenal, and the striker has completed a medical today.

Non-starter

After a bright start and seven league goals, Chamakh was marginalised after the return of Robin Van Persie and could never find the same form. This lead to off-field issues, such as being photographed smoking shisha after a match with QPR.

He made only seventeen appearances last season, scoring once, and has made four this season, scoring twice.

Arsenal have tried to offload him for almost a year, but his wages proved a stumbling block, being higher due to his arrival on a free contract. Bordeaux and Lille both failed to complete deals, but West Ham have stepped in, paying a portion of his wages while Arsenal pay the rest.

Chamakh said he was 'happy' to make the move, and 'didn't want to waste any more time' sitting on the bench at Arsenal.

Chamakh was simply not quite good enough, and we wish him all the best at West Ham. Perhaps he can reclaim some confidence there. Though he'll need to get ahead of Andy Carroll in the pecking order first. Which is a challenge.

Finally, with Gervinho at AFCON, Henry not re-joining, and Chamakh gone, there must be a striker coming in. Which can only be good news, considering the players linked.
