According to various sources, Arsenal are weighing up a shock move for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentinean isn't a dead-on starter at the Bernabeu despite his impressive scoring stats, and he has been linked with moves to England before, with City and Chelsea interested.
Now it seems that Arsene Wenger had identified Higuain as the solution to Arsenal's striking problems, and could surprise many with a starting bid of £20m.
Wenger's stormy relationship with Jose Mourinho could complicate matters, but Mourinho isn't flavour of the month at the moment, and the higher-ups at Real could intervene to deal with the transfer.
It would represent quite a coup for Arsenal, and one that would put to bed any rumours of a lack of ambition in the transfer market. Our source suggested:
'Wenger isn't unwilling to spend, he's sitting on his hands waiting for the right player. He thinks he's found that in Higuain, and he wants the deal done.'
Higuain himself stated he was not looking to move and pledged his support for the current Madrid manager:
"Mourinho is still Real Madrid's coach and he remains under contract here. I think that he will stay at Madrid," Higuain said at a press conference.
"Everybody's united at Madrid. We all support Mourinho and he backs the team."
You often hear strenuous denials from players about their futures, and Higuain is no different:
"I ignore all the rumours about my future. I am completely focused on Real Madrid," he insisted. "I hope to start scoring again as soon as possible, but the most important thing for me is to feel physically well again."
