It’s fairly clear that Arsene Wenger is targeting another striker (or strikers) for next season, with Arsenal often lacking firepower at crucial moments. Olivier Giroud has had a reasonable debut campaign, but can’t be the only option.
Remy
It wouldn’t really be a transfer window without a link to Loic Remy for Arsenal, and now QPR have been relegated the rumours have resurfaced. Remy has an £8m release clause thanks to QPR going down, and Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle are all interested.
Arsenal’s Steve Rowley scouted Remy at QPR’s game with Reading, though it is worth bearing in mind that Arsenal scout a lot of players, and there have likely been better chances for Arsenal to have a clear run at Remy, which says a lot about him. As well as the fact that he’s currently playing for QPR.
We don’t want you anymore
It’s well documented that David Villa came very close to signing for Arsenal in January, only for Barcelona to block the transfer. He’s still keen to join Arsenal however, but Arsenal aren’t so keen now.
At the age of 31 he’s only got a couple of years left of reasonable top-level action, and the contract he’d demand isn’t worth the service he could give. What’s curious is that despite refusing to sell him, Barcelona have continued to underuse him.
Arsenal’s main target is Stevan Jovetic (as you may have guessed), who was targeted even while Villa was chased. Chances are he’ll remain at Barcelona or move elsewhere. Arsenal seem to have no interest, though the idea of a loan-to-buy deal was mooted during the January transfer window.
