It’s not been the best couple of days for Arsenal in transfer terms. After their negotiations for Stevan Jovetic hit a snag, they could now lose out on a goalkeeping target, as Stoke’s Asmir Begovic could be set to move to Liverpool, according to the Bosnian press.
Replacement
Liverpool could offload Pepe Reina this summer and have a list of targets that includes Begovic. However, a deal may not be done with Stoke, as Arsenal were widely considered the front-runners previously.
Arsenal are considering a range of goalkeepers to challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the number 1 spot, including Rene Adler, Begovic, Lazio’s Federicio Marchetti, and even Pepe Reina.
However, Stoke appear ready to sell Begovic to the highest bidder, having signed Jack Butland as a future replacement. Arsenal will also be boosted by the departure of Tony Pulis, who notably had a grudge against Arsene Wenger for complaining about his style of play.
Rejection
Arsenal will hope they do not miss out on another target, as Marc-Andre ter Stegen rejected them recently in favour of a move to Barcelona. It would not look good for Arsenal’s image if Begovic now turned them down in favour of Liverpool, a club currently of lower stature than Liverpool.
Arsenal need to fight and win bidding wars to build a quality side, and this would be a good start.
