The story of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has been rather left alone of late, as it was widely expected that he would move to Bayern Munich.
Both he and Bayern were confident he would secure a move to his “dream club” as recently as last week.
However, a twist in the tale has emerged, as Dortmund have refused to sell him to Munich this summer. Having already lost Mario Gotze to their rivals, the German side to do not want to lose a second star.
This has opened the door for a possible move elsewhere for Lewandowski.
Arsenal
Arsene Wenger is a known admirer of Lewandowski and pursued him until he believed the deal was done with Bayern. While commentating on the Champions League final the Arsenal manager confirmed he was set to move across Germany.
Before this Arsenal had contacted the player with a view to securing a transfer, with a £20m fee mooted. Arsenal could now swoop again, as Dortmund would still prefer to make money off his departure, and would doubly prefer to sell abroad.
Show of intent
Manchester United are interested, but are blessed with strikers, while Chelsea are more interested in Edinson Cavani. With other PL teams otherwise occupied, Arsenal could sneak in and nab Lewandowski.
It would be a massive boost to the team as well as a huge statement to the rest of the league. With doubts over both Stevan Jovetic and Gonzalo Higuain, Lewandowski is an almost incredibly obvious alternative.
However, there are a few hitches-Dortmund may not want to sell him at all, though that’s unlikely, and it’s unlikely Lewandowski will sacrifice his move to Bayern in favour of going elsewhere.
