So with another day of the summer window gone, and no big names in and some suggesting we could be set to miss out on Rooney, Suarez and Higuain, with talks of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Napoli, respectively being other destinations for the players in question.
It might well be worth looking at some alternative signings for the striker role.
The Alternatives
So who are the alternatives? Well, there are only 2 that really come to mind that would have an impact at Arsenal; Roberto Soldado and Pablo Osvaldo.
Another one for me that would be worth considering that would be more of a gamble would be Luiz Adriano from Shakhtar Donetsk.
Roberto Soldado
Captain of Valencia C.F and Spanish international Soldado for me would be a great addition to the side that has suffered a similar fate of us of losing star players each summer he has steadied the ship and works for the team, a mentality that is ripe at Arsenal.
The Valencia man is a striker that shows great movement and with a record of 193 goals in 397 senior appearances, working out at 1 goal in 2.05 games, he poses a genuine goal threat.
At the age of 28, Soldado is coming into his prime as a striker he could be a very good signing for Arsenal.
With the World Cup coming next year Soldado may see Champions League football an important way to push his claim for a starting spot in the national team, however he may see playing in Spain the best idea, that’ll come down to him.
Pablo Osvaldo
Pablo Osvaldo, a powerful Argentine born Italian forward playing at A.S Roma is a similar style of player to Olivier Giroud and is essentially a more mobile form of hold up man.
Osvaldo does a lot of work for the team and his goal scoring record shows that, with 79 goals in 232 professional appearances, 1 goal every 2.9 games, essentially working to 1 in 3 for simplicity’s sake.
Osvaldo like Soldado has eyes for international success; at the age of 27 this could prove his last opportunity to be an important member of the Italy squad.
Osvaldo would add a lot to the side and give the side a lot of determination and power to the side, but I would question the reasoning to go for someone of similar ilk to Olivier Giroud.
Now for the gamble…
Luiz Adriano
Luiz Adriano, well where to begin, 1 of the Brazilian born players that led Shakhtar Donetsk to Europa League victory in the 08/09 season. Luiz Adriano is a strong, pacey forward with a very impressive goal record: 85 goals in 206 senior appearances, working out to 1 goal every 2 and a half games, roughly.
The advantage in going for Luiz Adriano would be that it’d be a big step up and he would surely want that challenge. At the age of 26 Luiz Adriano would have a few more years in him then Soldado or Osvaldo. But as said, he would be the biggest gamble out of the lot.
Out of the 3
For me, Soldado would be my first port of call; would he be happy being 4th choice in the sense of targets? Probably not, would he come? Maybe, the most exciting for me would be Luis Adriano though; he could be potentially an amazing addition!
Pablo Osvaldo would be much too similar to Giroud. On the transfer market this summer, we’re looking at Osvaldo being cheapest £15-£20mil, Soldado and Luiz Adriano being £20mil-£25mil.
