Some say Arsenal have no chance in hell; that the phrase ‘anything can happen in football’ simply does not apply to this game.
However, I am encouraged how many fans have got behind the team before this game with complete faith the Gooners can replicate or better the result at the Allianz from last season.
History and statistics suggest Arsenal face a mountainous task and there is no denying that. But we all remember what happened against Inter in 2003; Real Madrid in 2006; and Milan in 2008.
Fabianski – 8 - What a brilliant penalty save. Robben’s antics during this tie have been despicable for a player of his ability.
Sagna – 7 - He had to deal with Alaba and the third best player on the planet and he did superbly. Please, just give him a contract; he has deserved it for his wonderful performances this season.
Koscielny – 7 – A solid performance just like last season. Defenders have to be against a team like Bayern or else they will humiliate you. Fouled Robben in penalty area.
Mertesacker – 8 – The team almost suffered the curse of the commentator after a good first 20 minutes if it was not for Per’s interception. Per and Koscielny began their wonderful partnership in this game last season and they both performed admirably.
Vermaelen – 7 - An almost impossible task verses Lahm and the diver. Left back is not his favoured position, but he did well.
Arteta – 6 - Few mistimed tackles, but he broke up play in the middle. Was wise from Wenger to take him off.
Oxlade-Chamberlain – 8 - Absolutely fantastic performance again from The Ox. His dribbling was in full flow and it is a joy seeing him run without fear at some of the best defenders on the planet.
Cazorla – 6 – Great movement and effort. He was all over the pitch and his passing was excellent. At fault for Schweinsteiger goal.
Ozil – 5 – I would not look into this performance so much. He was given virtually no space by Bayern’s defence. Subbed off due to hamstring injury so did not have the opportunity to make up for a quiet first half. Was always going to be a tough one for him.
Podolski – 7 – Almost punished the team by giving away a free kick that lead to the disallowed goal. However, his finish for the equalizer was a thumper and brought the team back into the game immediately. From that moment, Arsenal played much, much better and created a fair amount of half chances.
Giroud – 6 – He was never going to get much time on the ball when Bayern will have at least 60% possession. He put in a good shift and did what was required of him. A nice header in the first half was his only real chance.
Subs
Rosicky – 6 – Contributed well to a good half of football.
Gnabry – 6 – New to the European competition and he did well for the few minutes he was on the pitch. Got into some decent positions. An obvious star of the future.
Flamini – N/A
Right, we are out of the Champions League, but winning the tournament this year was always going to be out of reach. The quality of the squad is not quite there yet.
However, it was a brilliant performance from the Arsenal against the best team in the world. Many predicted an embarrassing score line in favour of Bayern, but Wenger and the boys proved them wrong again. The team should take encouragement from that performance and I am certain Wenger will be congratulating them in the changing room. That is two good performances so far during this extremely difficult run of fixtures.
Lets keep it up.
