While the score line may suggest Arsenal had an easy ride tonight, those who saw the game will know it wasn't quite a stroll in the park. The Greek champions were well drilled and defensively stable, but never really threatened and ultimately Arsenal were the better team.
There were some fine performances, some excellent ones, and some well, poor ones.
Vito Mannone: 6
Decent game, as usual not tested much but made a couple of good saves. Did play a few passes straight out to Olympiakos players, but otherwise nothing to complain about.
Carl Jenkinson: 8
Who's Bacary Sagna? The youngster had another fantastic game, attacking and defending brilliantly. What stood out most today was his vision, his ability to spot players was better at times than our midfielders. Misses out on MOTM only because he didn't score/assist.
Laurent Koscielny: 6
Still a bit rusty, got a silly yellow in the first half and was responsible for the goal we conceded. Otherwise decent, and he didn't commit the same crime as his Belgian partner..
Thomas Vermaelen: 6
May have to rename the Vercielny partnership the Belgo-French Arrrfhhh Alliance. Suffered from the same issues as Koscielny, and repeatedly charged up the pitch when we were trying to hold onto a lead. At fault for the goal too, recovered second half and was fairly solid.
Kieran Gibbs: 7
Another solid performance. Did his job quietly, was a threat offensively and didn't let anyone pass him. Not much else to be said. Roy Hodgson was there tonight , surely a call-up is imminent?
Mikel Arteta: 7
95% pass accuracy, great defensive shielding, carried the ball out of trouble... He played a lot like that Mikel Arteta chap. Wonderful. And such nice hair.
Francis Coquelin: 6
Sometimes a bit lost in possession and rash in the challenge. Otherwise a passable performance by the Frenchman. He'll do fine while Diaby's out.
Santi Cazorla: 7
The usual magic feet, superb vision and rather profligate shooting. Again was quieter than he's been, but still impressed. That's the great thing about world class midfielders, they can be average and still look better than anyone. Made a few chances, set up Giroud at the end but his shot was blocked.
Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain: 5
Had much better games. Looked very pedestrian and just a bit off the pace. That said he didn't do anything horribly wrong apart from some questionable defending, but he didn't do much right, tried to do everyone's job at once.
Gervinho: 8 (MOTM)
A goal, an assist, and nary a hint of his usual frustration. This is a man in form, and the swagger as he played showed that. Moving him to a vague CF position has done wonders, and he's exceeded last season's goal count already.
Lukas Podolski: 7
Quiet again, but he did his job, looked dangerous at times, and scored. He only needs one chance, regardless of how he's playing. Needs more support, and perhaps should have gone central more often. Decent.
Subs
Theo Walcott: 7
Up for it tonight, looked busy and gave their defence problems. A recall beckons perhaps, he isn't playing like a man running his contract down right now.
Olivier Giroud: 7
Again was dangerous, and nearly scored if not for a block. He clearly is a great player, but he won't score without starting. Still, his physicality will be needed against Big Sam's Hoof Army on Saturday. Gave an assist for Ramsey, in an unusual goal-kick-flick on- goal move.
Aaron Ramsey: 7
Again looks rejuvenated this season, was tidy in possession, gave their defence problems and scored a Messi-like lob to put gloss on the victory.
