Result=good. Performance=poor. Not a bad point at Goodison but it is the performance that will leave Arsenal fans with a headache.
Wojciech Szczesny – 8 – couldn’t do anything about Fellaini’s classy finish for their goal. Kept us in the game tonight making some excellent saves. Don’t know about anyone else but I feel a lot more confident with him between the sticks.
Bacary Sagna – 5 – as usual he gave it everything he had tonight. However, his crossing was very poor tonight. He got in good areas yet failed to deliver the right ball on numerous occasions. I’ve come to expect better from Bac.
Per Mertesacker – 6 – good but not great from the BFG. Jelavic got the better of him a few occasions tonight and his lack of pace was exposed a couple of times. However, he was in the right place the majority of the time and made some good interceptions.
Laurent Koscielny – n/a – substituted after 2 minutes with a groin injury and was replace by Kieran Gibbs. Wenger later confirmed that he could be out for up to 3 weeks.
Thomas Vermaelen – 7 – came back into centre back when Koscielny went off and he certainly looked a lot more comfortable than in recent weeks. Got forward well and made some good tackles. With a good run of games he will get back to his best.
Mikel Arteta – 5 – uncharacteristically gave the ball away tonight. Looked a bit off the pace and he didn’t get make enough tackles for a defensive midfielder. Again, this throws up the question as to whether or not his creativity is being wasted so far back on the pitch.
Jack Wilshere – 7 – good performance from Jack. Perhaps not as eye catching as in previous weeks, but he got stuck in and carried the ball forward well. Shame that the majority of his teammates weren’t on the same wavelength tonight.
Santi Cazorla – 5 – looks like he needs another week in Panama. Didn’t know he was playing tonight until he blazed a shot over the crossbar – perhaps the story of his night. Poor.
Theo Walcott – 7 – scored Arsenal’s goal tonight with the first minute. Looked as though if anything were to happen tonight it would be through him or Wilshere. As each game passes by, just think to yourself: How much worse would it be if we didn't have Theo Walcott? Need to sign him up soon.
Olivier Giroud – 6 – worked very hard tonight however he didn’t get the service that he required. He did give the ball away a couple of times but certainly wasn’t the worst player tonight.
Aaron Ramsey – 6 – threaded a nice ball through for Walcott’s goal tonight but gave the ball away too many times. Again, he wasn’t the worst player but an improvement is needed.
SUBS
Kieran Gibbs – 6 – played the majority of the match after Koscielny went off injured. He made some good interceptions and a vital challenge in the second half but his crossing was poor. As with Sagna, he got into good positions yet failed to deliver the necessary ball.
Gervinho – 3 – I could not understand why he came on instead of Chamberlain. He gets into good positions yet frustratingly fails to deliver an end product. His stuttering technique when approaching the opposition’s penalty box is something I will never understand. Really poor.
Francis Coquelin – n/a – late substitute however he wasn’t involved enough to get a rating.
