We came into the Wigan game this afternoon on a high after a trouncing of a much-troubled Reading side.
It was vital that we kept the winning streak going and Wigan’s lowly position meant it looked likely we would do so.
Although this was eventually the case, it was certainly not the easy game many hoped for and on another day, the score could have been very different.
A fair result?
We were very lucky to walk away with a win today. Few players played particularly well and we didn’t create many stonewall chances. The chance we did eventually take was a penalty that looked pretty certain from most angles.
Our opponents Wigan weren’t without their own fair share of chances. If it wasn’t for Kone’s tragic finishing and Stam’s abysmal crossing, I feel they would have scored at least one.
However, apart from a few nervous moments, the defence did a fairly good job. I predicted 1-0 at the start of the match and, although I was unhappy with the performance, I will always take the three points.
What to do with Theo…
Although I’m sure not everyone would agree with me, today showed us that Theo is far from being ready to start up front in the Premier League. We know he can finish, he struggled again today as he did to an extent on Monday.
Theo’s most obvious asset is his pace and its safe to say that this is more useful on the wing and he certainly needs to adapt more if he is really serious about playing up front every week.
A British future
After the mass signing of British contracts last week, today we saw how important these youngsters are to this team. Today saw five Brits take to the field and in my opinion; Wilshere, Gibbs and especially Chamberlain were our best players.
Chamberlain is a player who appears far more suited to the front line than Theo. He’s much stronger and looks a more rounded player. Saying this, he put in a good shift on the wing and I hope to see him start far more games there throughout the season.
Despite the performance, many positives
Facts don’t lie; we’re 3rd in the league (Chelsea do have games in hand), we’ve won two on the bounce and now that the West Ham game has been cancelled we’ve got a nice break till our next game.
