As we near the end of what has been an eventful first week of the season for Arsenal fans and players alike, the despair and disgust evident at the Villa match has seemingly died down.

After being booed and jeered throughout the 3-1 loss at home to the Midlands side, Arsene Wenger’s depleted side picked themselves up and performed fantastically in Turkey against Fenerbahce.

Wenger’s nostalgia

There were some standout performances in Istanbul, leaving boss Arsene Wenger drawing similarities from last season’s incredible 2-0 Champions League win against Bayern Munich. That night the Arsenal boys triumphed against all odds against the team that would eventually win the competition, after a week  of heavy criticism surrounding their earlier performances.

Arsenal are now in pole position to land Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye after PSG pulled out of the race to sign him.

Paris had been the hot favourites to get Cabaye’s signature due to their ridiculous available funds, meaning they could offer anything Newcastle wanted. Coupled with a hefty pay-packet, Cabaye would be playing Champions League football with numerous French internationals.

Transfer roundabout

However the PSG deal relied on the transfer of wonderkid Marco Verratti, who handed in a transfer request earlier on in the window. The 20-year-old sensation then received a massive new contract offer and all of a sudden he was staying at Parc des Princes, leaving no need for a replacement.

As I am sure you will remember, yesterday we brought you details about an interesting writing competition at Arsenal Latest.

First of all thank you for all the responses and interest in the competition so far. We are pleased that so many fans have come forward to try their hand at writing about a club that means a huge amount to them and us.

All those that have applied we should have replied to, if we haven’t, feel free to contact us again and we will be sure to let you know all the key elements of the competitions.

Talking after Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Fenerbahce, Arsene Wenger sent out a strong message to the fans about his aims between now and the end of the transfer window, September 2nd.

The Gunners manager has also quashed all talk of Luis Suarez signing for the club and insists that deal is now deal in the water.

Suarez deal dead

“Yes,” was Wenger’s response when asked if the deal was dead for the Uruguayan international.

“Absolutely no chance of that.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is happy that the matter has been resolved now, following Suarez’s apology and he should continue with the Merseyside outfit.

The BBC’s David Ornstein believes Arsenal are targeting a move for Real Madrid pair Karim Benzema and Angel di Maria as Arsene Wenger finally starts to respond to the fans qualms over the lack of transfer activity.

Last night’s 3-0 win over Fenerbahce has all but confirmed the Gunners place in the Champions League group stages and the North London club are prepared to spend big to secure the signature of the France forward and Argentina midfielder.

They are prepared to pay £40 million for the 25-year-old former Lyon striker and although a fee for di Maria is unknown; Wenger is very much interested in him.
