Something tells me that Arsenal have taken the statement “anything over £40million will be considered” in the chase for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

They went ahead and triggered the clause in Suarez’s contract which states that the Liverpool striker COULD leave if an offer above the £40million mark came in, by offering just £1 over the asking price.

That’s £40,000,001.

Cheeky, but could be effective. Although the clause is not necessarily a release clause, meaning Suarez would be free to move, it does mean that Suarez’s representatives can argue against Liverpool’s judgement and will more than likely open the door for him to leave.

Arsenal have been in for Suarez ever since he made it clear he wanted to leave Anfield, as the Gunners look for competition up front. With the Higuain saga raging on for about a month now, and Wayne Rooney tethered on David Moyes’ leash, Suarez looks to be the best bet with the funds available.

But the extra £1 doesn’t exactly should “ambition!”. Have a look at some of the magical comments from the wonderful world of Twitter, where the weird, the wonderful and the woeful sometimes come out with strokes of genius….

@John_W_Henry (Liverpool Owner) – “What do you think they're smoking over there at Emirates?”

@JamieDalton82 – “I like the fact we didn't just go 1 penny over 40m. A whole pound. If that's not ambition then I don't know what is.”

@MeiriAdi – “The widely reported 40m+1 bid shows again that we're more interested in publicisting the "effort" rather than getting the player. #afc”

@paul_tomkins – “Liverpool have rejected Arsenal's Suarez bid of £40,000,001. Holding out for £40,000,002.”

@burman93 – “love how the Liverpool owner asks arsenal 'what they're smoking' after latest suarez bid, when they paid 35m for carroll and 20m for downing”

@DenizaGooner “WUN POUND FIISH, WUUN POOOOUND FIIIIIISH, COME AN HAVE A LOOK, ONE POUND FISH, IT’S VERY NICE, ONE POUND FISH! #Suarez”

@bankolehabeeb – “How can we pay £55m for Suarez when we still have to pay for anger mgt classes, file his teeth & pay for therapy on cannibalism? #AFC #LFC.”

@BAJDixon – “Looks like Suarez is going to cost Arsenal an arm and a leg.”

@JamieJal – “I'd love to see Real Madrid counter-offer 40 million and 2 for Suarez, then have the bidding continue to go up in £1 increments”

@Liam_ashley – “I've said it before & I'll say it again. I don't want that parasite Suarez at Arsenal. He's bad news.”

@LukeCowham – “I personally think Suarez is the most talented footballer in the Premier League. If Arsenal sign him that is massive.”

@JackDean0 – “Arsenal think they are gunna get Suarez for £40,000,001 add another £9,999,999 then they might have a chance #suarez #LFC”

@AaranVince – “1) AFC bid £40m 2) Suarez hands in transfer request 3) Suarez talks to Arsenal 4) Suarez joins Madrid 5) Arsenal left with Bendtner 6) Cry”

@Melay_8 – “£40,000,001 for Suarez? Arsenal could have offered £40,000,000 and Gervinho and it still would have amounted to the same thing”

@AndyStoddart – “Would love to have a player of Suarez's quality playing for Arsenal, would loathe to have a person of his character representing the club.”

Pls let someone help me and tell the liverpool coach that being a club manager is not a player manager,he is not the one to decide the amount for players. Liverpool can still survive without Suarez as they still surviving without Torres.

Now suarez is trying to be a loyal boy, but loserpool wants to activate his anger/bitting clause, we all know no team would be happy to keep an unhappy player, if suarez forces a move he will most likely achieve it because i dont think liverpool would be brave enough to run down his contract and keep him on the bench.. He wants to leave on a happy terms with loserpool thats the reason i think he has'nt hand in a transfer request, looser should accept the offer now or they might well accept less before the transfer window closes..this is why i think so.. Assuming its genuine that madrid value suarez only @£25m, and they are reportedly preparing a bid for bale, liverppol wount want to sell suarez for £25m and if madrid bid for bale that would more than dwarf any potential bid for suarez meaning they would forget him, meanwhile liverpool who now have an unhappy player in their ranks would want arsenal to re-bid the initial £40m for him, but arsenal have already spent on other players and only have £30m to give to liverpool..since the player wants to leave, and arsenal are the only party interested in suarez, liverpool would have no option other than to accept arsenals £30-35m offer.
