Sky Sources are reporting that former Gunners captain Cesc Fabregas is now Man United’s main transfer target of the summer.

United, who recently ‘lost’ Thiago Alcantara to Bayern Munich after the deal to take the Spanish midfielder to Old Trafford looked certain, have turned their attention to Barcelona teammate Fabregas and will look to pair him up with another former Arsenal man Robin van Persie.

Captain Fab

Fabregas was named Arsenal captain in 2008 after the departure of William Gallas and made 303 appearances in total – scoring 57 goals between 2003 and 2011.

He was a fan favourite at the Emirates, at the heart of a young side which included the likes of Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy, and even won the PFA’s Young Player of the Year Award in 2008. Statistics show that in Fabregas’ time at Arsenal, his influence on the side dwarfed that of Xavi and Iniesta’s at Barca.

A deal bringing Fabregas back to Arsenal would have been fairly straight-forward, as part of the deal that took him to Spain was that Arsenal had a first-option buyback clause in the player’s contract.

However United want to beat Arsene Wenger to the prize as David Moyes searches for a marquee signing in his first Mancunian transfer window.

The Deal

Moyes has lodged a £25million bid for Fabregas, although Barcelona are likely to hold out for at least £30million. The sum is similar to the £25.4million which took Cesc from London to Barcelona in 2011.

However the Catalans’ £50million signing of Neymar could open the door for a Fabregas departure, as Cesc, used at a striker rather than an attacking midfielder, has found himself stuck behind Xavi and Iniesta in the Barca pecking order.

United would more than likely use Cesc as an attacking midfielder alongside Michael Carrick, with Anderson, Tom Cleverley and Shinji Kagawa making up the numbers.

Settled

Although there has been plenty of speculation, Fabregas has maintained that he is happy in Barcelona, as we reported in June:

"I've always said that I'm happy at Barca. Whoever says that I'm leaving doesn't know me and has never spoken with me," he said.

"If someone says anything that isn't that I want to play at Barca, it's completely absurd." Concluded Fabregas.

If Cesc comes back to England, he comes to Arsenal. Simple as that really.

Definately like to see him back at Arsenal. Hate to see him go to Utd, it was bad enough Van Persie going. It would be another huge disappointment and another betrayal of Arsenal and fans.

Take Van Persie out of Uniteds team, and you have a very average, ageing side. Ferguson got a new-found hunger from these has-berms, which Moyes will struggle to do. And to say they are the same stature as Real Madrid, Bayern, Barcelona and even Dortmund is laughable. I'd say if he was to move to United or Arsenal, he would have a very similar impact in making each team title contenders. Until the transfer window is closed, nothing is certain. Lets see how scary united are without the hairdryer.

If he joins United he will be in a team that will win things. Simple as that. It would be a great move for United and Cesc.

Ha, gotta love how naive do many of you are!!
Firstly I love how you all of you appear to know exactly the make up of cesc's contract with Barcelona, do you all have copies?
Secondly if and that is a big if Barcelona do decide to sell him, he gets to choose where he goes, arsenal may have first refusal but he still decides on where he wants to go. And like RVP would surely see Utd are a much graeater team, they are the only club in EPL of similar stature to the other top European clubs. Arsenal are a faded force, c'mon they've never even won a European cup.

Couldn't give a fu*k really. He paid to leave Arsenal so god knows why so many want him back. Move on.

Maybe because people don't see it as paying to leave Arsenal but being eager to return to his boyhood club to play alongside Messi, Xavi, Iniesta.

Also the fact he would instantly improve the team a good 25-30% (perhaps more) and with 1 or 2 other top signings, give us a great chance of competing for the League.

It was his boy hood club. Yeah boo hoo. Like I said move on. More important targets to worry about.

LOL - we'll see....You know you are bobbing yourself at the prospect he could end up at United.

rooney wants to leave, rvp is 30 nw, welbeck is as good as a stationary rock, hernandez is wasting away his club years playing as a 3rd choice...utd bought scholes out of retirement, giggs should've retired already, vidic never plays a decent full season, ferdinant is an ass, getting on the wrong side of 30...nani, i guess is as good as gone, de gea is overrated, fletcher is always sick, ferguson left bk a big mess for moyes to fix, surely if utd go trophyless for 2 seasons in a row, mind u all hell will break loose, utd fall from grace...too much to risk for a high profile player to come in i reckon

Not only that, Barcelona put a 200 Million euro (£171 mil') buyout clause in his contract....Arsenal have the option to buy him at the price they sold him for, no one else!

There's also the problem that Barca face, a huge problem! As well as the buy back clause there's also a 50% sell on fee lodged in there too. If United are serious they will have to pay DOUBLE what their apparant bid is for Barca to get back what they paid for him. Do you think Barca would sell him for £25 mil, give us £12.5 mil, and pocket just £12.5 mil' themselves? It's almost too funny.....
