As the transfer window continues to fly past, fans are getting increasingly irate as to the lack of incoming players to Arsenal.

Fans have themselves to blame for this level of frustration (to an extent). The media run stories about transfers again and again because that is what gets hits. They have to fill column inches, even when there is nothing to write about. When there is nothing to write about, they either re-hash old stories or simply make them up.

The best example was a piece in today’s Daily Mail that really got to me. The initial title was: “Cesc Fabregas says he is a Manchester United fan”. This was a (non) story about comments that he made (while still at Arsenal) in 2009 before the Champion’s League semi-final. That was one comment over 4 years ago, about respecting their team, with the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney.

That was barely a story then, let alone now. The reason they ran the story was that it was something that sounds like an exclusive new story when there was nothing else going on.

According to the Mirror, the Arsenal board have moved to secure the long-term future of Arsene Wenger.

Thought to be an additional three years, the offer shows a signal of intent that the most successful manager in the club’s history is the man to lead Arsenal to a new era of success at the Emirates Stadium. The initial response from Wenger, as expected to the club he loves, is positive.

The rollercoaster 2012/2013 season

Considered good news for the majority of Arsenal fans, the extension seemed unlikely for much of the 2012/2013 campaign, with the losses to Blackburn and Bradford in the FA Cup and Carling Cup respectively being the most notable negatives of a turbulent season.

With the news that Mannone has finalised his move to Sunderland, the clear-out of this summer is nearing completion.

Considering the financial constraints that Wenger has been under for the last decade or so, clearing out some of the deadwood in the squad has to be considered a good thing for the football club. This summer has already seen Arshavin, Squillaci, Denilson and Djourou seal moves out of the club, while Bendtner is doing his best to complicate his inevitable departure.

Those aforementioned players that have left the club managed to play a total of 14 games for the club this season between them, while amassing a large wage bill.

Good riddance.

Arsenal have been linked to a number of big-name players in recent days, with Rooney, Higuain, Fabregas and Fellaini all rumoured to be on their way to the Emirates.

This has led to heated debate on which player is needed most urgently. The biggest split lies between the midfielders: Fabregas or Fellaini?

Power

Some feel physical presence and power is needed in the form of the Belgian, with Shaka Hislop saying Fellaini could become ‘the leader Arsenal need’. That’s a bit of an uninformed statement-Arsenal didn’t lack leadership in the last few months, and height and ‘nastiness’ doesn’t equate to leadership qualities.

Just after the end of the season, we held a poll on the website, where people could vote on how much money they expected to be spent in the summer.

The results were largely optimistic, with 35.6% of people expecting Arsenal to spend over £60m in the transfer window, in line with Arsenal’s alleged transfer budget of £70m. Few expected a quiet summer, with 6.1% predicting under £20m of spending. Generally, the outlook is positive.

Ambition

There haven’t been any big-money signings just yet, but Ivan Gazidis’s words yesterday indicated that may be about to change.
