The summer transfer window of 2013 has so far been dominated by Arsenal’s search for a star striker (e.g. Suarez, Higuain), but have we somewhat been blinded by the thoughts of Wenger dusting off the chequebook? Forget about your €50,000,000 atypical ego-maniac striker with teething problems we have other priorities Gooners!!

Crisis in Waiting

At present Arsenal have 3 first team centre-backs

- Thomas Vermaelen (Injured, back in October)
- Laurent Koscielny
- Per Mertesacker

With the removal of Johan Djourou(On-Loan: Hamburger SV) & Sebastian Squillaci(Free-Transfer to Bastia) from the squad we are now quite short at the centre-back position with many expecting Bacary Sagna to deputise for the coming season in response to injuries but is that really how to challenge for a title?

The Luis Suarez transfer saga has undoubtedly been the main talking point this transfer window.

Like Manchester United’s chase of Robin van Persie twelve months ago, the story has lingered for weeks on end, though the outcome is less predictable.

As with any transfer, there are several parties involved, and several complications make it unlikely that the transfer will go through before the beginning of September.

While two key parties are keen on the move, namely Arsenal and Suarez, Liverpool are refusing to change their stance, maintaining that Suarez is not for sale, or at least should not be sold for less than half the potential fee for Gareth Bale.

Pre-season at Arsenal: the perennial deja-vu

Long, drawn-out transfer sagas seem to be part and parcel of supporting Arsenal these days and this transfer period has so far lived up to expectations.

Similar to recent sagas, notably the failure in pursuit of Juan Mata and the successful chase of Andrei Arshavin, the media over the past couple of months has reported on, or in some cases fabricated, Arsenal's interest in the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Julio Cesar, Wayne Rooney and, with more apparent credibility, Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez.

All summer Liverpool’s managing director Ian Ayre has been insistent that Suarez is going nowhere, showing surprising loyalty to a player who in recent seasons has dragged his club’s name through the mud with controversial incidents, embarrassing fans who stick by his side, only to repay that loyalty by privately asking for a move to a rival team.

If only Liverpool showed such loyalty to Pepe Reina, an honourable servant of the club for the past 8 years, hitting out at the club he loves for sending him out on a surprise loan to Napoli.

The Liverpool owner, John W. Henry, recently took to Twitter to mock Arsenal in their attempts to sign Suarez.

The man clearly has a short memory, insulting the transfer business of a club who are known for being frugal with players, when Liverpool are widely thought to be a laughing stock as a result of their deals for players such as Andy Carroll (arguably one of the worst purchases in English history), Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing.

At the end of the season on May 20th, a poll was held on the site where people could vote on how much of Wenger’s £70 million budget they believe he would spend to strengthen the squad. The results were very optimistic – almost 36% of people believed he would spend over £60 million.

Just 18 days later, June 7th, a second poll was held. This subsequent poll revealed a significant drop in the previous optimism as only 28.9% of fans believed that Wenger would spend over £60 million.

Importance of Signings Now

It is now July 23rd and our only acquisition has been 20 year-old Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre. Although a promising young player (typical Wenger signing) and a good bit of business, as he was a free transfer, he is not quite what supporters wanted to see. We want marquee names.
