Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has sparked a lively debate in his recent comments about new signings this summer.

The French boss, known for his traditional frugality towards splashing the cash on big name stars, instead prefers finding hidden gems like Cesc Fabregas from the Barcelona academy. This summer was thought to be the polar opposite, with Arsenal being linked with expensive trio Wayne Rooney, Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez.

However with Rooney likely to spend another season at Old Trafford and Higuain’s bags packed for Napoli, Suarez remains the Gunners’ sole hope of a marquee signing.

Doubts over the Suarez deal have arisen over complications at his parent club Liverpool, with the Reds fighting for all their worth to keep the Uruguayan.

Good Intentions

Wenger’s recent comments – aimed at reassuring the Arsenal faithful that an unsuccessful transfer coup would not necessarily mean Premier League failure – only sparked outrage from a number of fans desperate for Arsenal to make it big on the transfer market.

“We still have a strong squad but we are there on the market to try to strengthen our team. With or without additions we can be title challengers next season.”

“What we want is not as name but as good player,” he continued.

“The name is less important. What is more important is the quality of the player. At the moment I must tell you we are not close to signing anybody.”

Response

Many fans took to social media to voice their disgust over Wenger’s defeatist attitude towards transfers, as the boss claimed nothing could be done before the start of the Emirates Cup.

“The truth: Wenger is afraid to spend to improve the squad as it will expose him if they do not succeed.” claimed one fan.

“Oh god, not another one of those summers.” Berated another Arsenal follower.

“I’m not really surprised, we were almost there with Higuain, then we backed out, we made a bid for the fat boy knowing it won’t be accepted, we’re running after the bitey, divey f%$ing racist, knowing fully well that as stupid as the mugsmashers are, they would rather keep him against his will than sell to us, for Christ sake, what kind of a game is this? we’re not after any realistic targets such as the soldados of this transfer window. I don’t think i know what to make of this transfer window. emphatically claimed another

The response to Wenger’s quotes – which he produced with only good, confident intentions – was ruthless. The honest truth is that Wenger DOES need to spend; he DOES need to bring in a big name and take a risk on a proven player, and he DOES need to prove that he boasts that skill as part of his repertoire.

But slating the manager on social media cannot gain anything.
