It seems the longest saga of the summer has now come to a bitterly disappointing end from an Arsenal fans point of view.
Last night news broke from Uruguayan journalist Martin Chaquero that Suarez had declared his intention to stay at Liverpool whilst in Japan on international duty.
Other options?
Arsenal have started to draw up other potential targets as the end of the transfer window draws near. Edin Dzeko and Michu are the names being thrown about today on the rumour mills. Arsene Wenger has been a long time admirer of the Bosnian since his days at Wolfsburg and was keen to land the forward until Manchester City inevitably blew us out of the water.
Michu, after his stunning display in the Premiership last season is another viable option and would look to add to his 18 league goals. At a price much less than the €50 million Arsenal would have had to pay for Luis Suarez, this deal may have some legs.
Dzeko is a talented forward who has been in fine form during pre-season and looks to be one of Pellegrini’s main attackers this season after falling down the pecking order under Mancini. Tall, quick and a splendid first touch, Dzeko would add some firepower to our front line.
However I can help but feel underwhelmed. Dzeko is a good striker but not in the same league as Suarez who most Arsenal fans were desperate to see arrive. The same goes for Michu, a good goal scorer and a would be a very potent threat for us but it seems a step down from Suarez.
But of course, if a club dithers in the transfer market like Arsenal always does, this is what happens- you see Jovetic, Villa, Higuian all on the market, yet in typical Arsenal fashion we are not keen to spend money and we are left with a French U20 international on a free transfer.
