The Metro has reported that former Manchester City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon could be on his way to Arsenal after release from the Etihad.

Wenger could convince the Romanian to join Arsenal by offering a shot at first team football—Pantimilion has impressed in his few chances at City and would provide genuine competition for Szczesny.

This would be ideal for our young Pole, who has come on tremendously this season due to the pressure of having a top goalkeeper, in the form of a revitalized Fabianski, behind him.

Without quality back-up Szczesny could be allowed to stagnate, not what Arsenal want because with the right competition he could push on from his Golden Glove in the 2013-2014 season to eventually becoming one of the World’s best goalkeepers.

Financial Incentive

Financially Pantimilion is a good call, costing nothing he would be a more attractive option than other Keepers linked to Arsenal such as Norwich’s Ruddy and Cardiff City’s Marshall.

At 6’ 8” Pantimilion is a huge presence between the sticks and is apparently keen to remain in England despite interest from Spain and Italy. As a free transfer he would be an ideal replacement for Fabianski.

Other Targets

Pantimilion is a sensible option, free, reliable and keen to stay in England, but he may not be to keen to trade the Etihad bench for the Emirates one. Other options include Marshall (report here), and Norwich’s Ruddy who The Mail reports would cost £6 million.

Both Goalkeepers would be keen to move following their clubs respective relegations, but Wenger may feel the financial incentive is the most important because other areas of the first 11 such as Centre Forward and Defensive Midfielder are in need of more immediate strengthening, and therefore favour the free Romanian.
