ArtetaFor the second time in a week, Arsenal let a two-goal lead slip. But whereas against Schalke, it was against superior opposition who had strong possession, and whose goals came after periods of constant pressure – against Fulham it felt like self-induced collapse.

Control and power

Arsenal started so brightly, and were ahead with their first attempt on goal in the 11th minute. Great movement down the right by Walcott, Cazorla and Sagna was rewarded with a corner.

Driven in by Walcott, Giroud rose majestically to power a header past Schwarzer. He got a hand on it, but the power of the header was too much for him.

After the run of form we’ve been on as of late, a draw against a strong team away from home is probably what most fans would have expected.  But after 45 minutes of the game, a draw became far more disappointing.

Worrying early signals

After 15 minutes of the game I was expecting another dismal performance from the Gunners.  Schalke had three good chances that they really should have done better with and it was a really scary period.

Once we’d found our feet in the first half this fear faded and I felt we began to play a quality of football I hadn’t seen for a few games.  Although this quality was short lived.

Well, on the plus side, we scored two goals and looked dangerous going forward. Conversely, the defensive issues still remain as we let a two goal lead slip. A draw is just about OK as we stayed one point behind Schalke with two games to play.

Vito Mannone8 - Don Vito had a very good game in goal making a number of important saves. The goals were not his fault and proved again that he is an excellent shot stopper.

Bacary Sagna8 - Isn’t it good to have Sagna back? Not that Carl Jenkinson was playing badly but Sagna is world class. A strong performance from the Frenchman and he effectively shut down Schalke’s attacks from the left.

After that crazy game in midweek against Reading in the Capital One Cup, Arsenal returned to the league against Man Utd who had also featured in a high scoring game in midweek.

In what used to be the 1st v 2nd place match in the league, Arsenal were comprehensively beaten at Old Trafford today, as a dominant Man Utd easily overcame a poor Arsenal performance, winning 2-1, thankfully though it was nowhere near as embarrassing as last years match.

Vito Mannone – 7 – the Italian shot-stopper could do nothing about the two goals which he conceded, however, he did pull off some very good saves during the match to keep the score line down.

Bacary Sagna – 5– defensively found it hard to deal with Young, though was arguably the best defender, however, offensively he didn’t contribute enough.

What can I say? One of THE greatest football matches I have ever seen.

In a night that saw us go behind 4-0 and Marouane Chamakh get a brace it can be safe to say, you will never see anything like this again.

Due to the fact we deservedly went 4-0 behind so early on, every player deserves the same low rating for their disappointing first half performance so I will only be doing the ratings from half time onwards.

Damian Martinez – 7 – Couldn’t really do much about any of the goals other than the one he palmed into the back of his own net. However, in the second half he looked reinvigorated. Made some good saves and looked more confident. He looks quite promising for the future.

Carl Jenkinson – 8 – You could see the Arsenal fan inside of him fighting for every second ball, determined not to lose this match. A solid performance from someone who will be a regular with the first team in the not too distant future. Also scored his first goal for the club!
