On a matchday that began with a march from the Black Scarf enclave of discontented Arsenal fans ended with the entire Emirates Stadium in a state of disgust by the limp performance that led to a 2-0 defeat to Swansea; a result which was fully merited by Michael Laudrup's side. After the march, came the rancour.

This was essentially a match of confirmation. While Swansea are the kind of team that Arsenal should expect to beat - particularly at home - they're not so weak that one can afford not to give a strong display in the pursuit of victory.

Overall, a very poor result from Arsenal – but the performance was marginally better than mediocre. Szczesny ensured that it was just two, with some strong saves. Arsenal were let down by a very flat midfield performance and a real lack of fire-power up-front.

Szczesny - 7 - Pulled off some great saves in the first half, and early in the second. Strong hands throughout, but some poor distribution helped put the side under pressure. But Arsenal’s best player by some margin.

Jenkinson - 5 - Had performed well until the final minutes. Constantly pushing up and down the right hand side, his desire to get forward and pass forward let him down in the end. Credit to Swansea for the pressure, but he should have played the easy ball!

Liverpool has played host to its fair share of smash and grabs, but Arsenal weren’t a threat. How you feel about a point at Goodison Park probably depends on what you think Arsenal’s level is this season, but on the balance of play, this is a point gained.

Happy with a point

It was a disappointing performance from Arsenal, but this is a good point for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, it should have been none. We were poor, and Everton will wonder how they didn’t win that game.

Second, Everton might be on an iffy run but they’re unbeaten in ten games at home.

Third, against one of your main rivals, a draw away is never a bad result.

Result=good. Performance=poor. Not a bad point at Goodison but it is the performance that will leave Arsenal fans with a headache.

Wojciech Szczesny – 8 – couldn’t do anything about Fellaini’s classy finish for their goal. Kept us in the game tonight making some excellent saves. Don’t know about anyone else but I feel a lot more confident with him between the sticks.

Bacary Sagna – 5 – as usual he gave it everything he had tonight. However, his crossing was very poor tonight. He got in good areas yet failed to deliver the right ball on numerous occasions. I’ve come to expect better from Bac.

Arsenal gave a performance that mirrored the miserable weather in Birmingham yesterday, as the match against Aston Villa ended in a drab goalless draw that by no means flattered the home side.

Strength Down The Left

Arsenal actually made a strong start to the match. The Gunners have often been blighted by slow starts, no more so than in the recent wins over Tottenham and Montpellier, so it was encouraging to see positive intent in the passing, especially down the left-hand side.

Twelve months ago, I never thought I'd be typing these words, but the return of Kieran Gibbs is a huge boon for Arsenal. The encouraging start to the season began to stutter once Gibbs was absent with injury, and the good working relationship he has forged with Lukas Podolski has been a key facet of Arsenal's attacking play.
