We came into the Wigan game this afternoon on a high after a trouncing of a much-troubled Reading side.

It was vital that we kept the winning streak going and Wigan’s lowly position meant it looked likely we would do so.

Although this was eventually the case, it was certainly not the easy game many hoped for and on another day, the score could have been very different.

A fair result?

We were very lucky to walk away with a win today.  Few players played particularly well and we didn’t create many stonewall chances.  The chance we did eventually take was a penalty that looked pretty certain from most angles.

In a game that we would have dropped points from last season, we managed to hold on and come away from the DW Stadium with an important 3 points.

Wojciech Szczesny – 7 – made some good saves today and came away with a clean sheet. Only aspect of his game that needs to be improved is his kicking.

Bacary Sagna – 7 – he was caught out of position a couple of times today but overall, a good performance.

Per Mertesacker – 7 – another solid performance from the BFG. He made several, vital interceptions to stem Wigan’s attacks.

After what can only be described as an awful period for Arsenal, including crashing out of the cup to League 2 Bradford, it came as a huge relief to all Gunners to Arsenal return to winning ways against bottom of the table Reading.

Starting Strong

Seeing Arsene Wenger field arguably Arsenal’s side, starting both Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain up front, and seeing the useless Gervinho relegated to the bench, was the first sign of things to come, as a Santi Cazorla inspired side won their first away match since the Capital One Cup victory at Reading.

Only Arsenal could make you feel nervous when holding a 4-0 lead. However, they managed to see it out and come away from the Madejski stadium with 3 points. Despite the fact “it was only Reading”, I felt the team played really well tonight. Besides , you can only beat what is in front of you.

Wojciech Szczesny – 7 – decent game from the big Pole. He couldn’t really do much about any of the goals due to sloppy defending. I felt he dealt well with crosses tonight.

Bacary Sagna – 7 – the most consistent player in the team? I hope that the talk of him leaving in the summer is incorrect because he is certainly worth holding on to.

This season more than any I have found it very difficult to be positive going into any game no matter who we’re playing.  However, even I thought I could relax and enjoy some footie when I saw that we had drawn minnows Bradford in the League Cup.

A statement of intent

This feeling of relaxation increased even more when I saw the team Mr Wenger decided to put out.  The team was effectively our best eleven with the exception of Arteta and perhaps Walcott.
