The Gunners have taken part in some pretty breathtaking matches this year, keeping us on the edge of our seats and gasping throughout the 90 minutes.

This was not one of those matches.

A game that was bigged-up as much as a game can be, turned out to be a fairly flat affair as Jose “flowing counter-attacking football” Mourinho parked the Chelsea team bus in front of Petr Cech’s goal.

The sole entertainment from the game came from some questionable refereeing from Mike Dean, which should have resulted in a red card for John Obi Mikel and a penalty.

December has been a tough month at Arsenal. After a fine victory at home to Hull, results against Everton, Napoli and Manchester City have been less impressive, quality of opposition notwithstanding.

The difficult run will not end just yet, with a home encounter against José Mourinho’s Chelsea on Monday night.

Team and injury news

The main injury concern emanating from the Etihad is the deep cut Laurent Koscielny suffered to his knee. Originally appearing worse than it seemed, he is now likely to only miss the London derbies against Chelsea and West Ham on Boxing Day. It won’t be too long before Koscielny’s return however, as he has a ten percent chance of featuring against the Blues.

Manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that Mesut Ozil needs a rest, however, that rest will have to wait until after Monday’s clash with neighbours and title contenders Chelsea.

Ozil, who has featured in the majority of games since his club record move in the summer, has at times looked tired and shown signs of fatigue in matches recently, and playing his first season in English football will not help with that.

Normally, at this time of year, Ozil would be looking forward to a winter break, as he had in Germany and then at Real Madrid, but instead he is facing the prospect of a hectic festive period.

Reports in the Italian press suggest Arsenal and Manchester United will be looking to fight it out over Juventus and Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio in the January transfer window.

Il Sussidiario believe that both Premier League clubs will try to tempt the 27-year-old away from Turin and David Moyes’ team have been linked with him before.

Arsenal’s interest, if these reports are to be believed, is sudden as this is the first time our name has crept up in conversations surrounding Marchisio.

He is being linked with a move away from the Old Lady because other midfield rivals seem to be committing their future to the club, which leaves a starting position for the Italian in the balance.

It was confirmed yesterday afternoon that Jack Wilshere will serve a two-match ban after accepting a FA misconduct charge following his offensive hand gesture made towards Manchester City fans during the 6-3 defeat last weekend.

The incident was caught on TV cameras but not picked up by any officials which means the FA were able to initiate their new scheme where incidents ‘not seen’ can be settled with a disciplinary proceeding.

Wilshere admitted to the charge but challenged the now mandatory two-game ban because he felt the length was extreme.

This was most likely down to the fact that in November 2011 Luis Suarez was only given a one-match ban for a similar incident to Fulham fans.
