The match against Sunderland on Saturday saw the return of Olivier Giroud which consequently showed why Giroud is missed when he isn’t in the Arsenal team.

An early goal soon settled any nerves arsenal fans had with a neat shot around Vito Mannone after a lovely reverse pass by Jack Wilshere.

This was then followed by an interception of a back pass which Giroud took first time which showed the confidence he had.

Arsenal’s third goal was lovely play but the touch by Giroud to get it through to Tomáš Rosický was class and showed how good Giroud especially if he has runners beyond him.

There was a fair amount of optimism around the Emirates Stadium this past week because Bayern Munich had come to town and that was expected. The fans were excited hoping something special may occur especially with the recent memory of Arsenal beating Barcelona 2-1 with the famous voice of Martin Tyler shouting Arshavin.

This was noticeable when the team came out to a rousing reception which got everyone’s blood flowing and adrenalin pumping. The atmosphere was brilliant which went up another level to previous games and allowed Arsenal to make a tremendous start and that followed when Mesut Ӧzil won a penalty for Arsenal.

Arsenal’s record signing decided to take responsibility and take the spot kick although seemingly low on confidence with a few poor performances over recent weeks.

Reports this morning have circled the papers that Real Madrid's Isco is unhappy at the Bernabeu and could be open to a move to England in the summer.

Arsene Wenger has apparently always been a fan of the Spanish playmaker and could be open to a £30 million bid for him.

Fierce competition

As Isco rejected a move to Manchester City for the Spanish giants it would be of no surprise if moneybags City went in for him again as City manager Pellegrini is a massive fan of the future Spanish star and would reportedly love to see him wearing sky blue.

The Gunners go into tonight’s game full of confidence after a big cup win against in form Liverpool whilst also managing to rest many first team players. It seems Bayern Munich have been using the League as a warm up for this tie winning 4-0 against Freiburg in their last league fixture.

Arsenal went out on away goals in this fixture last season and therefore know how crucial an important first leg result is, especially with the second leg away from home. A much tighter affair is expected this time round with both teams going very well in their domestic campaigns.

Team News

Arsenal have no new injury concerns going into tonight’s Champions League tie with Bayern Munich. Tomas Rosicky was fully rested from the squad of the Liverpool game with tonight’s match in mind highlighting that the Czech could be starting from the off.

At this stage of the competition last year Arsenal were well and truly outplayed at the Emirates by a Bayern Munich side that would eventually go on to win the Champions League.

A year on, Bayern are regarded as arguably the best team in the world, however, Arsenal have closed the gap slightly on their German counterparts.

Guardiola looking to end jinx

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has an unwanted record at the Emirates stadium. As a head coach he has yet to taste victory at the Emirates, seeing his Barcelona side draw and lose on his only two visits to the stadium.

Guardiola said: ‘It’s my third time as a trainer here to play against Arsenal. I’ve never won here.

‘I learnt that you can’t dominate 90 minutes against Arsenal. It’s impossible.
